A legend for Europe

Millions of years ago the goddess Europe and the god Trust were going to marry. Europe relied on him. He was the god of Trust, she thought, he wouldn’t be able to betray her. Instead, Trust was bewitched by a nymph called “Catlike eyes”, as her power was in her eyes, and he betrayed Europe. The goddess was very sad and she began to cry. A tear-drop which ran down her cheek was pearl-grey, the colour of melancholy, of hatred and disappointment she felt in her heart with regard to what he had done to her. The pearl-grey tear fell from her face into the ocean, but her consistency was distinguishable because it was different from the ocean’s drops, since the tear had been born from an emotion and it became a grain of ground in the ocean. The god Cosmic, Europe’s father, to console her,  promised he would give her a vast land  and he would create it from that grain of ground. Europe was very happy of his gift but , to make her still more glad, he promised her that he would widen this land whenever she decided to give birth to a child. Every child, he said, would be given his own land. Later on the goddess Europe met the god United, she fell in love with him and  she gave birth to thirteen daughters and two sons: Italy, Germany, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Malta, Romania, Slovenia, Turkey, United kingdom, Cyprus. Every one of them had a land with her or his name. Altogether the lands were called “United Europe”, from the names of their  father and mother.

A legend for Europe

Once upon a time Europe lived in an enchanted land, that was  in the sky, on the clouds, and was very famous in that world.  One day Europe was running through a big cloud with his friend America. They ran for hours and hours but after 100 miles, suddenly, Europe fell from the cloud and died. His family reached the place and looked at it. It was fantastic, there were rivers, lakes, mountains and green fields full of flowers. As they were attracted by that land they decided to live there and this land was called Europa as a memory of the discovery.

                       The name of Europe

Many years  ago, on the top of the Sacred Mountain, a bad divinity, Apollo, obliged all the world that was known, to offer to him a man like a religious offering.

Tired of this dictatorship, people tried many times to ask  the divinities to help them. The only divinity that answered was Europe. In fact she was the divinity of freedom, democracy, peace, equality, solidarity and tolerance. But she couldn’t defeat such a powerful divinity. Then, because of the liberty of every man, she spoke to Zeus, father of every divinity, that gave her enough power  to placate Apollo’s anger; but in this way she couldn’t be immortal. So Europe chose the mortal life to give liberty to all the known world, that was called “Europe”.
